Yaesu's FT-817, touted as the Ultimate Backpacker; it is a self-contained, battery powered, multi-mode portable transceiver which covers the 160-10 meter HF bands, plus the 6 meter, 2 meter, and 70 cm bands With it's size of (5.3" x 1.5" x 6.5" WHD) and light weight (under 2 pounds), this unit outputs a max of 5 watts on all bands. (You can choose from four power levels; 5/2.5/1/0.5 W in SSB, CW, AM, FM, Packet, or SSB based Digital modes) This radio carries most options/features of full size radios and the unit can be power from an external source up to 15v or from an internal NiCad pack or internal (8) AA's batteries.
In use, it's a good radio. The radio allows Cross-band and Cross-mode ( but not duplex ). The RX is fairly good for a unit this size and the audio sounds like a larger physical radio. TX audio reports have been excellent so far on FM, AM, and SSB. In CW mode, the RX is good with some slight interference from strong nearby stations ( the optional filter helps solve this ). The radio in RX draws 365 ma , so it's not the all-time backpack radio but more again like the great camping radio ( due to battery limitations imposed ).
In all, I have no major complaints though some minor ones... I dislike
the F (function) button being hidden in a small hollow. It could have been
placed where my large fingers fit... The radio only allows one extra filter,
so either the CW or SSB filter option can be installed only... It's output
is only a max of 5w, I would have preferred 10 or 15w for the extra power
if needed.
As I said, no major complaints!

The LDG QRP tuner and the
FT-817 make a good combo with the PW-1
antenna. Equipment running from a 4 ahr gell cell, allows all day operation.
Though this day (Feb) the weather was still chilly.
