This beauty of a rig I recently acquired. The DSW-40 ( there are also other mono band models ) is a 40m CW rig that puts out 2+ watts. It has a  stable digital VFO with RIT function, built in keyer for 5 to 50 wpm, and a CW frequency annunicator. The rig operates at 8 - 15v with a current draw of about 35 ma (rx).

Upon power up, it defaults to frequency of 7040 khz ; the QRP home frequency for 40m. It tunes in steps of 200 Hz per step at start, or by holding in the dial it will switch to 50hz steps (tuning rate of 6 khz per turn when at 200). There is no limit to the tuning (full 40m band) and no limit on the RIT. The frequency is given out in audio morse by a quick press of the tuning dial.

In use, the rig is a pleasure to play with. The VFO is a ROCK. I couldn't notice any drift at all.  It has plenty of "ears" ( the GAIN had to turned down half way most of the time ) and the controls are simple and few. I added a paddle, a wire antenna (33 ft) and a set of earphones for the travel package. I use a battery pack of  10 AA's which keep the rig running a long time (full weekend) with just a slight reduction of output as the voltage gets lower. The filter width is 500hz and for me it was just fine (though a option to open it would have been nice). Get one if you can, esp if you like to backpack.

No complaints about this rig... kudos' to Dave Benson!

*** A new model, The DSW II -20m was released at Atlanticon 2003 after nonproducton for about 2 years.
