Lake Erie

Cloverleaf of highways.Labor Day weekend 1997 was a travel weekend. The trip began with a flight to Detroit Metro on Friday afternoon via Pittsburgh, and ended with a return flight Tuesday night via Charlotte NC.

Coming into Detroit Metro, the Interstates made an interesting picture from the air. This shot taken by a digital camera thru the windows of the airplane during descent.

Many boats dot Put in Bay seen from above. Saturday was spent on Put-In-Bay. We drove past Toledo to Port Clinton where we boarded a Jet Express for the ride out to the island. The summer population of this community is swelled by the boaters who moor in masses around the island. Picture from top of Perry Monument.

The Boggs Trio

The Boardwalk is an open-air cafe located on a short pier extending out onto Lake Erie. Hard benches were more than forgivable for the tangy pizza , cold beer, happy crowd and especially the lively music. The music was The Eddie Boggs Show. This talented trio includes Eddie Boggs, an entertaining tenor who is a Jr. High Counselor in his "winter" life and Karen Nickles, a Patsy Cline-style singer who lives on the island all year round. Doug Carter completes the trio with a gentle baritone voice that can sound very much like Elvis'. Doug plays keyboard, both Karen and Eddie play guitar, Karen also plays flute and percussion. Eddie also plays a fiddle and a banjo. Click below to hear a chorus from "Uptown Boogie on a Saturday Night" from their CD "THEN 'n NOW".

View of boats in bay

Sunday evening we took a restful cruise over to Crystal Bay in Canadian waters. Crystal Bay is well named since the clear water sparkled over its rocky bed. Many boats were gathered there to listen to popular music played live on a barge anchored in the bay. Crystal Bay was crowded with rows of rafting boats full of partying people.

Crystal Bay Lighthouse

En route Crystal Bay, we passed this light.

After circling Crystal Bay and seeing for ourselves that we were in Canadian waters where certain minimum dress codes vary, we rafted for awhile with a friend's sailboat. We were too far away from the barge to hear more than ocassional strands from the band. Return trip was after dark. Clouds obscured the very visible stars as our captain skillfully wove the vessel among the solar-powered channel markers to its berth on Gibralter Canal.

After a restful night of sleep, and a slow day on Monday, Tuesday was an exciting first day of school visiting Out Lady of Mount Carmel High School in Wyandotte.
