Maryland
isn't shutting the door on its death row--yet!
Although the state legislature won't be repealing the death penalty this year, the momentum is clearly on our side for abolishing this sick practice once and for all!
Stand up and take part in these upcoming actions to help abolish capital punishment in Maryland: calendar of events
The drive to abolish Maryland's death penalty this year failed when the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee narrowly rejected repeal legislation. But the movement is far from defeated! In fact, we remain in better position than ever to continue the fight for abolition, with a moratorium on executions in place, public support for executions declining, and a repeal-supporting governor in the statehouse. Further, momentum against the barbaric practice of execution by lethal injection has been gaining across the country with moratoriums and investigations in 12 states. This legislative session was only the first round in the battle for abolition. Let's keep up the pressure and push harder than ever until we win! Join the movement and take part in upcoming actions!
Maryland’s death penalty has been proven racist by a University of Maryland study, which found that “blacks who kill whites are 2½ times more likely to be sentenced to death than are whites who kill whites” and almost 11 times more likely than whites who kill blacks.
With a moratorium still in place and the level of public discussion rising, abolitionists are in an advantageous position to build the movement to shut down Maryland’s death row once and for all.
Let's build our movement stronger and abolish the death penalty in Maryland once and for all!
