Observing Certificate Program

The United Astronomy Clubs of New Jersey currently offers observing certificates in the following categories:

Messier Objects Observations

This challenge is sponsored by Duane Degutis of the Hopatcong Area Amateur Astronomers and is available to members of all UACNJ clubs. General requirements include the visual observation and recording of the 110 M-Objects, which include galaxies, nebula and star clusters.

Stellar Spectroscopy

Sponsored by Barry Malpas, UACNJ Observatory Chairman, this challenge requires the observer to spectroscopically (visual), or spectrographically (photograph), record 11 stellar spectra with at least one representing each stellar type (O, B, A, F, G, K and M), with major absorption lines identified. This certificate is made available to any observer in the United States or Canada.

Asteroid Observing

The Asteroid Observation Program consists of three challenges, levels (Novice, Intermediate and Advanced), resulting in three separate certificates. It is sponsored by Andrew Salthouse of the New Jersey Astronomical Association and requires the candidate to visually observe and record asteroids from one, or a combination, of several observing lists. This challenge is open to members of all UACNJ clubs.

Full requirements for these programs may currently be acquired by writing

Please note: The requirements for all of the certificate programs will soon be available directly from this web site.

The UACNJ is looking to expand its certificate program with other observation specialties such as solar, lunar, planetary, double star or other deep sky lists and are looking for observers within UACNJ clubs to act as sponsors.
