The Elizabeth River

The Berkley Bridge, Eastern Branch of the Elizabeth River, is shown with the draw open. The draw is required to open on signal at any time except from 5:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m, Monday through Friday, except Federal holidays. Between the hours of 5:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. vessels with a draft of 22 feet or more may request a bridge lift provided at least 12 hours advance notice is given.

Scuba Diving at Portside. Charlie Sturgis dons his wetsuit to explore the dark water around Portside. A full-face mask is worn to protect himself from water around the dock. Other gear includes scuba tank, gloves, knife, fins & lights, and a B.C. for deep diving. Charlie is a diver who has a good knowledge of diving in this area. Diving in this area is generally limited to visibility of any where from 8 inches to 50 or 60 feet. Charlie has been trained exclusively by the experts of Chesapeake Bay Diving located on Mt. Vernon Avenue in Portsmouth. Charlie currently resides on his boat at Tidewater Yacht Marina which is located only a short walking distance from Portside along the Elizabeth River.
