        Membership

        The FAA Flying Club, Washington, DC, was organized in 1962 “...as a nonprofit corporation in order to stimulate and encourage interest in aviation, to advance the knowledge of its members in aviation and aviation related subjects, to sustain and improve the proficiency of its members in flying, to provide the opportunity for its members to fly aircraft economically and conveniently...”

        Membership in the Club is open to “employees of the United Sates Government and their immediate families, Members of Congress and their staffs, and other such individuals as the Board of Directors may determine.” We truly welcome new members; you certainly do not have to work for FAA or the federal government to join the FAA Flying Club.

        We would be pleased to talk with you about membership. Please Contact Us.

        Please click here to see the FAAFC Constitution And Bylaws.

        Deposits, Dues, and Hourly Rates

        All members are charged a deposit, which is fully refundable upon leaving the Club. You are not required to find a replacement member to receive your deposit refund. The deposit amount is determined by the level of aircraft you wish to fly, as follows:

        • Advanced level (i.e., Warrior eligibility only) - pilots pay a one time $200 deposit;
        • Complex level (i.e., Sierra and Warrior eligibility) - pilots pay a one time $300 deposit;
        • Advanced level pilots stepping up to Sierra eligibility pay an additional $100 deposit to bring their $200 deposit up to the $300 level.

        Dues are charged monthly and are used to cover the fixed costs of operating the Club. Dues are currently $40.00 for students and $50.00 for regular members, regardless of level of aircraft flown.

        Hourly usage rates are computed using tach time and the hourly rates include fuel (currently reimbursed to members at the amount paid). Tach time means that at low RPM settings (e.g., taxiing, idling, approaches) you are only charged for a fraction of the elapsed clock time. Current aircraft rates, subject to change, are:
        • Warrior at $99.00 per hour (tach time)
        • Sierra at $120.00 per hour (tach time)

        Members are responsible for refueling an airplane at the end of each flight. Both Hyde Field and Manassas Regional Airport have 24-hour fuel service. The Manassas FBO and the Hyde Field FBO bill the club directly for fuel and oil purchases. For fuel purchased by members on X-country flights, the Club reimburses members at the amount paid.

        Bills are sent to all members monthly and are payable within 30 days. The monthly bill covers dues, flying charges, and any other club charges such as manuals. Please recognize that the club is a purely volunteer organization and members are expected to pay promptly (by the 20th of the month please). Board members have minimal time available to chase late payers.

        Insurance

        A $1M insurance liability policy is provided by the Club and the coverage's includes complete hull damage with a maximum $500 damage deductible. Please note that Club members are held responsible for the deductible for any incidents determined to be the members fault (consider it learning reinforcement should you ding or otherwise damage a Club plane). More details about insurance coverage are available from the Club Treasurer.

        Maintenance

        Club aircraft undergo 50 hour and 100 hour maintenance. Squawks are inspected weekly and repaired immediately. The Club spends considerably on aircraft maintenance, including interiors and paint and addresses all squawks, no matter how minor. The club diligently complies with all Airworthiness Directives (ADs) affecting the fleet.

        Check-Outs

        Before flying each type of Club airplane, an initial checkout by a Club approved instructor is required. In addition, an annual Club check ride is required of all members; a Biennial Flight Review (BFR) will satisfy this requirement.

        24 Hour Scheduling

        We schedule Club aircraft using www.aircraftclubs.com. This internet based system provides easy access and viewing of Club member reservations and provides a simple way to send email to other Club members. We also have access to the system's toll-free telephone option, useful when you are away from your PC. We currently allow reservations to be made up to 3 months in advance. Club members are encouraged to "negotiate" with other members for time and help each other out. A current Club phone list, including Club approved instructors, is provided with each member's monthly bill.

        We certainly allow extended VFR and IFR cross-country trips. In fact, that's why many of us joined the Club.
