Rebuttal to Theurich, et al. Article in CSE

Theurich, et al. wrote an article which appeared in Computing in Science and Engineering, wherein they advocate conversion of numeric Fortran applications to C++. Dan Nagle and Toon Moene have written a rebuttal, which is available in PDF format or in HTML format. Michael Metcalf wrote a rebuttal, which appeared in CSE.

In short, Theurich, et al. provide only an anecdotal story of a partial conversion of a code from Fortran 77 to C, which they anticipate further converting to C++. They used no objective criteria for measuring their efforts or their results. They do not know what efforts will be required to further convert their C code to C++. They are not in a position to adequately compare their results with those which similar efforts would have had if applied to modernizing their Fortran code. Nevertheless, they feel justified in claiming that their efforts were well spent. We disagree, and provide this point-for-point rebuttal in PDF format or in HTML format.
